avim is a lightweight, native text editor for Mac, iPhone, and iPad, built for writing, editing, and previewing plain text and Markdown files with a clean, distraction-free experience. Designed for people who want a simple, fast, and focused writing environment, avim keeps the interface minimal while providing the essential tools needed for everyday document work.
On every platform, avim opens and edits UTF-8 text files, including Markdown documents, and offers a built-in Markdown preview so you can switch between raw source and rendered output instantly. It also includes document search, optional line numbers, and PDF export for both plain-text and rendered Markdown layouts. This makes it well-suited for note-taking, writing, documentation, and lightweight content authoring, wherever you happen to be working.
On Mac
Built for macOS 14 and later, avim runs natively on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. It follows a single-window, single-document workflow with a familiar menu bar and keyboard shortcuts, prioritizing simplicity and speed over complex features.
On iPhone and iPad
On iOS and iPadOS 18 and later, avim works directly with the Files app: open documents from On My iPhone, iCloud Drive, or another cloud storage provider you use, and edit them in place. Changes are saved automatically, so there is no Save button to forget. Smart quotes, smart dashes, and autocorrect are turned off, so your Markdown syntax is never quietly rewritten. Exported PDFs go straight to the share sheet, ready to save to Files, send via AirDrop or Mail, or print. On iPad, you can open several documents side by side in separate windows and use hardware keyboard shortcuts for search, preview, and line numbers.
Simple by design
There are no unnecessary settings panels, accounts, or heavy productivity extras—just a streamlined editor focused on your files and clear document presentation. With support for standard text formats and an emphasis on native platform behavior, avim is ideal for anyone who values a minimal yet capable writing tool. It is especially appealing to writers, developers, and anyone who prefers a clean, no-frills editor for Markdown and text-based work.
